Android Jelly Bean adoption finally overtakes ICS, but Gingerbread still rules the roost

Google puts out the latest Android platform version numbers once a month to give developers a better idea of how many given devices are running a particular flavour of the mobile operating system. The latest numbers show that Jelly Bean is now installed on more devices than Ice Cream Sandwich, but once again Gingerbread continues to dominate the chart.

The numbers show that Jelly Bean (that includes 4.1 and 4.2) is now installed on 28.4% of all Android devices, no doubt helped along by updates from manufacturers as well as sales of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Ice Cream Sandwich isn’t far behind, however, claiming 27.5% of device installs.

Gingerbread still remains the elephant in the room, though. The aging version of Android accounts for 38.5% of all installs. Why, you may ask? There was a pretty big year-long release gap between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich that was filled with a mountain of devices and software updates. Honeycomb, the ill-fated version of Android optimized for tablets, also never made the jump to phones.

If rumours are to be believed, another version of Jelly Bean will soon be with us too. Just the other day we saw mention of Jelly Bean 4.3, a purported version number spotted in version logs that’s said to be coming in time for Google I/O. The latest version of Android was seen running on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, but there haven’t been any indications as to what new features the update will bring if it is indeed real.
