Android overtakes Apple in total app downloads

Even if you weren’t sure what to make of the tablet market share numbers yesterday, app download numbers should be a little bit more clear cut.

ABI Research reports that Android has overtaken iOS in app downloads, with Android accounting for 44% of mobile app downloads compared to 31% on iOS. So why the surge all of a sudden?

The success is accounted to the huge growth seen in Android smartphone shipments, going from 20% growth in Q1 ‘11 to 36% in Q2. Meanwhile, iPhone growth dropped from 15% to 9%. Android’s install base now outranks iOS too by a factor of 2.4:1. Crazy numbers.

It’s not all rainbows and unicorns though. Android might have the highest number of mobile app downloads, but Apple still rules over apps downloaded per user thanks to a higher quality selection of apps.

The cherry to top it all off? App downloads are expected to hit 29 billion by the end of 2011, compared to 9 billion last year.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go lie down while we process those large numbers in our already throbbing heads.
