Angry Birds to get TV series and movie spinoffs

You know a game is popular when it branches out into plushie toys and even iPad and iPhone cases, but Angry Birds is set to become even more of a household name than it already is thanks to a planned new TV series and film.

The cartoon series will hit television screens this autumn, with the hero bird and baddie pig characters appearing in two to three minute bursts over 52 episodes.

“We’re going to roll it out on all possible devices. We want to be on all screens,” Nick Dorra, Rovio’s head of animation, told the MIPTV conference in Cannes.

The shorts will be followed in 2013 or 2014 by a full blown movie, which is currently in development.

According to Dorra, the animated series will look into the “deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters” and answer fans’ burning questions, “Such as why are they always angry?”.

The latest version of the game, Angry Birds Space, sold 20 million copies in 10 days. Clearly, space is not the final frontier.
