The Apple Watch 2 comes in three different flavours: Aluminium, stainless steel and ceramic. So what's the difference between them, why are stainless steel and ceramic more expensive, and which is best for you? Here's our full Apple Watch aluminium vs stainless steel vs ceramic comparison.
If you're looking to buy Apple's latest wearable, the Apple Watch 2 (or 'Apple Watch Series 2' to give it the full official title), chances are you might be utterly befuddled by the variety of makes and models on offer. Not only can you buy it in different sizes, with all manner of strap choices, but you also have to pick one of three finishes: aluminium (or 'aluminum' if you're American), stainless steel and ceramic.
Here's the difference between these three case materials, so you can choose which is best.
Apple Watch 2: Aluminium
The aluminium model of Apple Watch 2 is the cheapest of the three, mostly because it's easier and less costly to manufacture. The aluminium Apple Watch has a matte metallic frame which is lighter than the stainless steel model. Aluminium weighs less than half as much as stainless steel, which is good news if you want a lightweight wrist rocket.
Note that the Nike version of the Apple Watch 2 sports an aluminium finish.
Apple Watch 2: Stainless Steel
The stainless steel Apple Watch 2 is more expensive as it's more difficult and expensive to manufacture, mostly thanks to the hardiness of the material.
Stainless steel is a more premium material than aluminium, offering a shiny finish compared with the matte aluminium model of Apple Watch. Stainless steel is also more resistant to corrosion and tougher overall, although scratches - if they do happen - show up rather easily.
Apple Watch 2: Ceramic
If you're feeling a bit plush, the ceramic Apple Watch 2 is the most expensive of the three models.
The smooth white surfacing is no doubt gorgeous and feels great, and it's also incredibly tough. You'll have to really bash the ceramic Apple Watch around to cause any damage. Of course, you'll also need to dig deep for this model, as it doesn't come cheap.
