BBC to broadcast 2012 Olympics direct to phones

The BBC plans to broadcast athletic action directly to mobile phone handsets when the Olympic Games hit London in 2012. So, just in case you thought there would be any kind of escape: there won’t.

“Only one in 50 people used mobiles to follow Beijing… it didn’t catch on for Beijing but it is our big idea for London,” Roger Mosey, the BBC’s director of London 2012, has said. Since 2008, however, smart phones have become prevalent in every-day life and high-speed networks the norm so there is every chance that the BBC will have more success with the project during the London Games. Given the recent overloading issues that we have been experiencing in the capital, let’s just hope that London’s networks are up to the task.
