BBM for iOS and Android will launch this weekend

BlackBerry announced earlier this year that BBM would be made available for both iOS and Android. The app will soon be available to download, according to the company, who says that the Android version will be released on September 21st, with the iOS app following a day later.

You’ll need to be running a minimum version of Ice Cream Sandwich for Android, and iOS 6 for Apple devices. Still, does the world really need cross platform BBM at this point? There are tons of popular options out there right now, including Google Talk, WhatsApp, and Line, not to mention Skype. You’ll still need a BBM PIN too, which dampens the appeal when other apps only need an email address or phone number.

If you’re committed to BBM, though, then you’ll be able to download it starting at 12pm on Saturday for Android, and midnight on Sunday for iOS.
