Call of the wild: Australian parrot mimics ring tones

Forget Bill Gates, here’s a real tweeter. A red-collared lorikeet found in Australia has learned to imitate the sounds of mobile phones.

According to Ringtonia, an RSPCA shelter in Brisbane took in the parrot and discovered that the brightly coloured bird could imitate different mobile ring tones. Have a listen for yourself here.

ABC News in Australia quotes RSPCA spokesman Michael Beattie, saying that the lorikeet prefers men to women.

“The person in the household who had the most interaction with him was probably a male,” he said.

Perhaps the original owner got fed up constantly thinking that his phone was ringing.
