Cannonball is an old school arcade game in the purest sense. It’s a simple shooting gallery game with a visual style reminiscent of ye old pop cork gun games from the fair. As you might have guessed from the title, there’s a pirate theme as well.
You tap the screen of your phone to launch balls into the briny blue, taking out the circular targets that are attached to cardboard cut out pirate ships, giant squid, seagulls and the like.
It’s important to aim for the circular targets rather than what they’re attached to. While you’ll get a handful of points for sinking a ship (usually 50) you’ll get more points if you successfully hit the targets first. Should you sink a ship before hitting the target, all those lovely bonus points will be dragged down to Davy Jones’ Locker.
Each level has a time limit within which you’re to rack up a requisite number of points to proceeed. The timer is indicated by a slow-burning bomb fuse at the bottom of the screen. We don’t need to tell you what happens when the time runs out do we?
You can create a profile from the menu so you can brag to your shipmates about your high scores. This is a nice feature but we’d like to see OpenFeint support for Cannonball in the future.
Cannonball has weighed anchor in iTunes App Store (59p) Android Market (62p) Ovi Store (£1) and the Palm App Catalog (£1.25).
