Elgato EyeTV Mobile iPad 2 TV tuner: hands-on

Elgato recently introduced the EyeTV Mobile a compact TV tuner designed especially for the Apple iPad 2. Recombu got some hands-on time with it last night at the Computers Unlimited event.

The EyeTV Mobile is tiny, very small – smaller than a box of matches. It plugs directly into the doc and has a mini aerial that pulls out to receive a Freeview signal.

Control the tuner using the simple (and free) EyeTV Mobile app. Elgato was keen to stress the the software is not final yet. This well featured app lets you access a full EPG, recordings which are stored on the iPad’s internal memory.

Live TV is included and a particularly interesting feature is Timesift Buffer, which provides a 2GB buffer (around 76 minutes), should you wish to pause Live TV.

Elgato EyeTV Mobile works with the iPad 2 running iOS 4.3.3 or newer. also includes a rod aerial with magnetic base and removable suction cup.

Elgato’s crafted a niche at creating TV tuners and software, most recently we tried Elgato Tivizen, a wireless TV tuner that lets you watch TV on your tablet, even in you don’t have WiFi or 3G, by creating its own hot spot.

Elgato EyeTV Mobile is expected to ship in the next couple of weeks and will cost £99.95. We’re hoping it could work with the new iPhone (which we’re expecting to have confirmed next week), especially if it’s more powerful than the current iPhone 4.

We’ll bring you a full review as soon as we get a sample.
