If you’ve ever wondered what that suspiciously fake-looking tree near the chippy is, chances are this free Android app will be able to tell you if it’s a cellular mast or not.
Antennas for Android available for all devices running Android 2.0+ and allows you to get a fix on just how good your signal is. Antennas also reveals where the nearest mobile phone towers are, displaying search results in the standard Google Maps overlay (right) or the more detailed satellite view.
To get the best results with Antennas, check the ‘Use only 2G networks’ in the Settings folder (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile networks) and make sure GPS is turned on.
This will display every mast that’s connected to you, their strength (displayed as a number) and your overall connection strength.
If you search with 3G switched on however, you’ll only see one tower. According to the developer, this is due to the Android OS, not the app itself.
Did we mention that this is free? Download this now, and then spend the rest of the day showing off to all your mates who rushed out to buy an iPhone 4.
