Christmas is getting closer and every day until then we’re picking our favourite apps for the festive season. Christmas is a time when accidents can occur in the home, so today we’re looking at British Red Cross: First Aid a free app for Android, BlackBerry and iOS designed to prepare you for emergencies.
Designed by the BritishRedCross the app follows a simple design along the bottom are tabs: Learn, Prepare, Emergency, Test and Info.
Learn contains advice on 18 common emergencies – from Asthma Attacks to Choking and Meningitis to Strains and sprains. Each includes a checklist of tasks and FAQ’s, accompanied by pictures, diagrams sometimes videos. Prepare is designed for emergencies you may face when out and about and includes tips and checklists for Crowd incidents, Earthquake and Flooding. It’s certainly worth checking before you go on holiday or to a festival.
The most useful section of the app is Emergency (right) offering step-by-step guidance on what to do in an emergency. The advice is broken down into concise steps, which are easy to follow and has built-in timers, videos and quick links to call 999.
Test includes interactive questions where you answer questions to unlock achievements. This is an area that needs development – at the moment there are only six categories, with around three to five questions, which aren’t very long or taxing. The final section is a bit of background information about the British Red Cross, with information on donating, volunteering or training.
For the festive season the app includes a special Christmas section, with advice on coughing up a coin (from a Christmas Pudding), burns from brandy, slipping in the house or Turkey carving cuts, which are well worth reading.
Whoever you are First Aid by British Red Cross is an essential download, whether you study and examine everything to be prepared for emergencies or just download it in case, having so much useful information close by is invaluable. It all works offline too – so you don’t need a data connection.
