Addictive app Flappy Bird racks up $50K per day in advertising revenue.
First there was crushing candy, now it’s tapping a screen to propel a tiny, flapping bird upwards, avoiding green pipes in your way as you do so: behold ‘Flappy Bird’. The simple yet dangerously addictive game has been in the App Store and Google Play Store for nearly a month, but it has already been downloaded a whopping 50 million times and has earn over 47,000 reviews in the App Store. As a result, it’s earning on average $50,000 a day from in-app ads.
The rules of the game are pretty straight-forward and easy to follow. All you have to do is tap the screen to keep the bird flying, and if you hit any green pipes in your way as you fly, the game is over. What isn’t straight-forward and easy, however, is avoiding the green pipes. Chances are you won’t get a higher score than 5. There isn’t any level 500 and alternative Dreamworld for this game. But you will probably spend about an hour just trying to reach a feeble score of 5. And, worst of all, its annoying difficulty is exactly what makes the game so addictive.
Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen created the game after spending a few nights coding when he got home from work. He said: “The reason ‘Flappy Bird’ is so popular is that it happens to be something different from mobile games today, and is a really good game to compete against each other.”
He added: “People in the same classroom can play and compete easily because ‘Flappy Bird’ is simple to learn, but you need skill to get a high score.” As for any changes or updates to the game, Nguyen said: “‘Flappy Bird’ has reached a state where adding anything to the game will ruin it somehow, so I’d like to leave it as it is.”
