Nexus phones to feature ‘insanely great cameras’ says Google’s Vic Gundotra

If a statement recently posted on Google+ by the company’s VP isn’t a vote of confidence for the future of Nexus camera hardware, we don’t know what is. Vic Gundotra – Google’s Vice President of Engineering couldn’t help himself when a curious commenter posed a question to him directly on his company’s social networking platform: Google+.

A G+ user by the name of Sizar Adam asked Mr Gundotra, “I hope that someday we will just carry our future Nexus and we won’t worry about any heavy camera 🙂 is that possible +Vic Gundotra? ” This seemingly innocuous question was met with a tease from the Google exec who claimed that future Nexus devices will feature “insanely great cameras. Just you wait and see.

Whether it’s to be interpreted that imaging will be the focus of the next Nexus devices remains to be seen, but we are certainly intrigued by what Mr Gundotra is alluding to. As highlighted by PhoneArena, the Motorola-made X Phone, suspected to stand in as the next significant Nexus device may well tote a Sony-made camera module, surpassing the so-so snappers Motorolas are typically adorned with, not to mention featuring Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

Based on the progression from Samsung Galaxy Nexus to Nexus 4, we’re hoping for a little more than Photosphere 360, perhaps some integrated augmented reality functionality? What would you like to see in the next major release of Android?
