Google allows multiple app versions for different phones and tablets

Google now offers the option to develop differing app versions for different phones. This should hopefully have two effects; more apps able to take advantage of high-end processors, and more apps capable of running on cheaper handsets.

Google software engineer, Eric Chu blogged last week: “We’re pleased to let you know that… multiple APK support is now available. Multiple APK support is a new publishing option in Android Market for those developers who want extra control over distribution.”

Google are looking to end the fragmentation of Android, with differing versions of software on different hardware. In celebration, here’s a blow-updancing Android man… thing.

This also means developers will be able to publish the same app for both smartphones and tablets, and the device will be able to use the correct version. (You know, sort of like what iPhone and iPad compatible apps do already…)
