How to send money to someone using Skype and PayPal

Skype now offers full PayPal payment support, so you can transfer money to a friend or pay for services with the popular messaging app, using your humble smartphone.

Just when you thought that handling your virtual cash via PayPal was as simple and efficient as possible, the company goes and teams-up with Microsoft to offer full Skype integration.

This PayPal and Skype partnership means that online money transfers are now even more flexible via your Android mobile or iPhone. This service is rolling out to 22 countries to start with, although we’re expecting further locations to be added in time.

This guide shows you how to use the Skype app to send money, in the UK as well as abroad.

What is Skype PayPal money transfer?

The Skype mobile app now allows you to send money from within its interface using PayPal. That means it works for any users of Skype who also have a PayPal account.

The Skype mobile app is available on iOS and Android, meaning no matter the device you choose to use, your money can be transferred with just a couple of taps. This will also work no matter what platform the receiver of the cash uses. In other words, Android users can make payments to iOS users and vice versa.

How do PayPal Skype mobile app payments work?

When you’re chatting with someone in the Skype app, simply swipe your finger right across the screen to enter the ‘Find’ menu. In here you’ll notice a bunch of add-on icons, offering a variety of services. The new feature adds a ‘Send money’ option, so give this a tap and you can transfer cash to the user you’re chatting with.

The first time you do this, you’ll need to sign into your PayPal account. Not on PayPal just yet? You’ll be prompted to setup an online account, which is thankfully quick and easy.

Enter the amount you want to send and off it goes, after some reassuring ID verifications. Quick, and pleasingly simple.

PayPal works with a connected bank account, so no matter who you bank with, you can link your online account to PayPal. This then removes the money from your account when you make a payment. You can also transfer money direct into your PayPal account if you’d prefer it to come from a separate pot, rather than dipping into your current account.

Where can I use PayPal on Skype?

The PayPal support feature has rolled out to the Skype app in 22 countries to begin with. These include the United States, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

When will PayPal payments come to Skype?

This partnership has already launched, so the payment system is available right now. Make sure your app is fully up to date and you should be able to transfer cash immediately. Just head to the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store and search for Skype, and you’ll see an ‘update’ button appear if your app isn’t already the latest version.

Your friend doesn’t need to have an up-to-date version of Skype for this feature to work, as the cash simply goes straight into their account.
