HTC could be planning its own online app store

According to the Financial Times, HTC could be planning to open its own online store selling apps, e-books and digital magazines.

A source “with knowledge of the situation” told the newspaper that the Taiwanese company is recruiting for content editors to populate the site; initially it will be a small team based in Taiwan but expanding out to 100 people in locations around the world if the site is a success.

With HTC renowned for its excellent bespoke software skins, like HTC Sense for Android, it wouldn’t surprise us if the company is finding new ways to differentiate itself from competitors.

Although the company declined to comment on the app store specifically, a spokesperson did tell the FT that “We are always exploring new areas we can add value to our customers but we can’t comment on our future plans” – certainly not a flat-out denial, is it?
