HTC Desire 650 in a nutshell: Design

The Desire 650 will launch in two different colours, ‘dark blue’ and ‘lime light’. Both models sport an unusual half-smooth, half-textured rear plate which is soft-touch, and helps you to figure out which way is ‘up’ when you pull it out of your pocket.

At 140g, the HTC Desire 650 should be pretty comfortable to operate for extended periods, helped out by those curvy edges. Of course the bezels surrounding the 5-inch screen are quite thick, so the phone isn’t as compact as you might have hoped.

HTC Desire 650 in a nutshell: Features

That 5-inch display packs a 1280×720 HD resolution, so visuals should be reasonably crisp, although that TFT panel possibly won’t be as strong as rival phone displays when it comes to vibrancy and contrast levels. Still, HTC has added in a Night Mode feature, which filters blue light to make things easy on the eye in the evenings. Plus you get front-facing BoomSound speakers, which will hopefully prove more than powerful enough for cutting through background clamour.

The Desire 650’s 16GB of on-board storage can also be quickly expanded up to 2TB by adding a microSD memory card, which is great news if you want to carry around a massive media collection.

A 13-megapixel camera sits flush with the Desire 650’s rear surface and offers a f/2.2 aperture lens for capturing your everyday life. The HDR mode should help you capture decent-looking shots when there’s tricky lighting, although low light performance will probably struggle without use of a flash.

You also get a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with the obligatory beauty mode built in.

HTC Desire 650 in a nutshell: UK price and release date

You can pick up the Desire 650 in the UK from Febuary, although an exact release date has not yet been confimed by HTC. Likewise, the UK price of the phone is yet to be revealed, although we’d expect the Desire 650 to go on sale for around £149 to £199.

That will make the Desire 650 a direct rival to the likes of the Moto G4 Plus and Wileyfox Swift 2 Plus, which is a tough crowd to beat. After all, those phones feature fingerprint sensors, more powerful processors and impressive camera tech.
