HTC releases bootloader to unlock mobile phones launched after September 2011

HTC is introducing a bootloader unlock for all Android smartphones released after September 2011. This means owners of new HTC Android handsets will be able to unlock their devices and customised the user interface.

In a statement on the HTC developer blog: ‘HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. We have heard your voice and starting now, we will allow our bootloader to be unlocked for 2011 models going forward. We plan on releasing the updates that will allow you to unlock your bootloader in the coming months, please keep an eye on this website for more details on which devices will be adding this feature.’

The bootloader will be available via an update to all mobile phones launched after September 2011, including the HTC Flyer, HTC Rhyme, HTC EVO 3D and HTC Sensation, although availability may vary depending on the carriers, and the list currently doesn’t include many UK carriers and this isn’t a sim unlock. Check out the full list at the end of the piece.

With regards to older models like the HTC Desire S, HTC states: ‘we continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.’

If you are thinking of accessing the bootloader, HTC highlights potential side effects in detail. These includes: physical damage caused by overheating, including hearing aid compatibility, specific absorption rate values, invalid DRM keys leading to invalid content.

To check download the update  you will need an HTC dev account first. We should point out that accessing the bootloader may invalidate your warranty and ability to access future updates, so think carefully before you download it.
