Huawei Ascend P2 confirmed: Fastest 4G, 13-megapixel camera, 4.7-inch screen

Huawei has officially confirmed the Huawei Ascend P2, a slim Android Jelly Bean handset billed as the ‘world’s fastest 4G smartphone.’

CEO Richard Yu made the announcement at the start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Ascend P2 is the successor to the Ascend P1 and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean overlaid with Huawei’s Emotion UI 1.5.

In-cell technology means the phone is just 8.4mm deep, yet packs a 4.7-inch IPS HD screen with infinity-edge design and 315ppi rating.  Magic Touch technology enables users to operate the touchscreen using gloves and Corning Gorilla Glass is on-board too.

The Huawei Ascend P2 incorporates 4G, supporting ultra-fast download speeds of 150Mbps. According to Huawei this is faster than the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE,  which clock at 100Mbs and the 3G iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S3, which are 20MBs.

Richard Yu said: “Ascend P2 is the perfect combination of elegance and power, and further proof that there’s no need to compromise when desiring a perfect smartphone. It is evidence of the outstanding smartphone experiences and great technology that we are committed to bringing to consumers globally.”

The Huawei Ascend P2 will be on sale globally in Q2, arriving in France on Orange in June 2013. The Euro price s €399, which makes it considerably cheaper than other flagships.

2013 looks like it is shaping up to be a busy year for Huawei, the announcements follow the launch of the Huawei Ascend D2 earlier a water and dust resistant phone with a 5-inch screen and Huawei Ascend Mate with a 6-inch screen. We like the look of the Huawei Ascend P2, it’s got a pretty tasty spec sheet  Huawei clearly means business and wants to take on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5. We’ll bring you hands-on photos and video very soon.
