Huawei Ascend P6: Price, specs and release date

UPDATED with UK price and release

Thin is in once again, or so Huawei would have us believe. The recently announced Huawei Ascend P6 is the latest claimant for the coveted, albeit short-lived ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’ title.

What makes it an unusual super-thin phone is the fact it’s landing on our fair shores unlike past title holders, such as the Fujitsu Arrow and Alcatel Idol Ultra.

Huawei Ascend P6 specs

Coupling its 6.18mm thin profile with an almost all metal chassis, a 4.7-inch 720p IPS LCD display and Android 4.2, the Ascend P6 doesn’t exactly scrimp on the specs front.

Speaking of Android, the Ascend P6 packs a heavy dose of Emotion UI, Huawei’s custom interface. Everything is heavily skinned. It’s fun, fluffy and easy to customise with themes and bespoke widgets. This may appeal to casual users, though Android purists probably won’t take.

The quad-core internals take advantage of Huawei’s own K3V2+ processor clocked at 1.5GHz. With 8GB of on board memory, it’s a good thing Huawei loads on a microSD card slot for additional storage.

Optics play a big part in the Ascend P6’s appeal. Pairing an oddly high-resolution 5-megapixel front-facing camera with an 8-megapixel rear camera, the Ascend P6 could be the best selfie phone on the scene.

It also introduces a new camera engine for Huawei, IMAGEsmart. The rear camera packs an f/2 lens as well as an impressive 4cm macro capability – so you can create close-up shots with the maximum amount of background blur from that f/2 lens.

Unfortunately, you won’t see LTE in the release version of the Ascend P6, with HSDPA delivering download speeds of about 14MB per second. From October to November though, a refreshed model will be released sporting LTE radios.

Huawei Ascend P6 price and release

So our appetites are whet, but when can you expect to get your hands on the Huawei Ascend P6?

The Ascend P6 will be available in over 100 countries, arriving in the UK on July 4th. It will be available on all major networks, includeing EE, T-Moble, Three and Vodafone. The Ascend P6 will also be the first Huawei smartphone ranged by the Carphone Warehouse and is available for pre-order now.

As for the price, Huawei says that the handset will retail for free on £21 per month contracts and will be available for £329 on pay as you go.
