Hulu heads to iPad and iPhone: Brits go green with envy

Good news for US-based couch potatoes: online TV site Hulu has launched its iPhone and iPad apps. They’re tied into its new Hulu Plus subscription service though, so you’ll have to pay to use them.

The apps let people stream current US shows like Glee, Family Guy, The Office, 30 Rock, House, Saturday Night Live and Modern Family – with every episode of their current seasons available, as well as archived classics including Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ally McBeal.

Subscribers will pay $9.99 a month for Hulu Plus, which includes access to the iOS apps. Hulu Plus could well be a killer app for iPad in particular: Hulu CEO Jason Kilar says that “I’ve been watching Hulu on my iPad for several weeks now, and I’ve watched more TV through the iPad than any other device”.

It’s exactly the sort of app us Brits have been crying out for – in particular, it would be nice to see the BBC launch a similarly native iOS version of its iPlayer. Hulu hasn’t announced plans to launch in the UK yet, so for now, its app is a North American thing only. Still, if you want a glimpse at the future for TV on your mobile and tablet devices, this is a good place to start.
