iPhone 4 gets a dedicated flight sim: X-Plane HDEF-4G

When Apple announced that its new iPhone 4 had a higher resolution display and more processing grunt than ever, it was only a matter of time before a flight simulation took advantage. The genre has traditionally been used to put new technology through its paces, after all.

So: X-Plane HDEF-4G. It’s an all-new version of the existing X-Plane flight sim, which has already spawned numerous iPhone spin-offs, and a hi-res iPad edition. “We have combined the airplanes from ALL the version of X-Plane from the iPod, iPhone, and iPad into ONE app,” explains developer Laminar Research in its App Store listing.

“X-Plane HDEF-4G has all the resolution and power and graphics of the iPad compressed onto the 4. This, coupled with the code being optimized for the iphone 4 processor and graphics, results in a more tightly detailed and hi-speed app than we have ever seen for any mobile platform… ever.”

It certainly does, and has a premium price point to match: £5.99, which Laminar say will likely double soon. So if you’re keen to get into the virtual cockpit of an F-22, B-1, Boeing 787 and other planes on your iPhone 4, you’d be advised to get in quick before the price goes up.
