iPhone 5 waterproof case roundup

You might be jetting off to some sunny holiday destination, relaxing by the pool or moshing to your favourite band in a field, but whatever you’re up to this summer; chances are your iPhone might find itself in harms way a little more frequently than usual.

With this in mind, we’ve found three hardy waterproof cases that could serve as perfect solutions to preventing scuffs, scratches and most importantly, sodden iPhones from occurring.

OverBoard Waterproof iPhone Case – £17.49

The OverBoard Waterproof iPhone Case is the most affordable option in our lineup at just under £18, but despite it’s low price tag it doesn’t skimp on quality. The pouch protects against snow, dirt and sand as well as offering waterproofing in up to six meters of the wet stuff.

OverBoard

It’s the bulkiest of the bunch, measuring in at 6 inches by 4.9-inches, but that means it can accommodate a range of devices including the iPhone 5 and, with the clear front and read windows, you can still use the touchscreen and take snaps to your heart’s content.

Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case – £59.99

The next case comes out a partnership between mobile accessories kings Griffin and Catalyst Lifestyle. The Griffin Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case is purpose built for the iPhone 5 and features IP68 certification. Its two halves snap around the phone and cover ever port, speaker and control in a mix of durable plastic and rubber.

Griffin’s tested one of its toughest cases to withstand a two meter drop onto hard ground, dust, dirt and snow and taking a dunk in up to three meters of water. At £60 it’s certainly pricier than the OverBoard case, but as it’s purpose-built for the iPhone 5 it lets you use the touchscreen, camera, phone, and all the hardware controls and ports without a problem.

LifeProof frē iPhone 5 Case – £70.58

The third case in our lineup may be the priciest at £70, but it’s also the most elegant. The LifeProof frē iPhone 5 Case is billed as ‘the world’s smartest case for the world’s smartest phone,’ and it is pretty clever. At just 12.2mm thick and a sliver under 30 grams it adds minimal bulk to the svelte body of the iPhone 5. LifeProof has created 10 different colour combinations to spruce up the typically utilitarian look of tough cases with the frē, including a coloured scratch protector on the front and a coloured back plate.

Like Griffin’s offering, the frē adheres to both IP68 and US Military standards of toughness (MIL STD 810F-516.5 to be precise) meaning that it can be submerged in up to two meters of water and dropped, muddied, frozen and dirtied without fear. The frē also offers easy access to hardware controls and still promises clear audio for music playback and calls.

We have to thank EE, Three and Vodafone for providing us with some iPhone 5s to dunk and drop too.
