The mobile industry is close to a milestone, over the next few days 1 million apps will have been reached.
Search and analytics engine Mobilewalla, which tracks apps, has found that there are 987, 863 apps across four platforms (iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry), with an average of 2000 being released every day.
This breaks down as follows:
- Apple – 590,138 (59.95%)
- Android – 320,315 (32.54%)
- Blackberry – 43,544 (4.42%)
- Windows – 35,479 (3.60%)
Over the last year the number of Apple iOS apps has risen from 338,000 to 589,480, while Android apps have increased from 115,000 to 319,774.
Anindya Datta from Mobilewalla comments: “This is truly an astonishing accomplishment that cannot be ignored. The growth of apps is the fastest growing consumer segment in the history of commerce.’
Looking at apps in terms of genre, Mobilewalla found the most popular is Entertainment with 16.68%, Games with 13.36%, Books 10.21%, Lifestyle 8.02% and Utilities with 7.13%. Social Networking was least popular with 2.71%, although, this area is dominated by Facebook and Twitter, which most people already have.
Although the research is interesting, we’d be curious about the number of apps available in the Nokia Ovi store or the breakdown between iPad and iPhone apps. Also recently we reported that Windows Market had surpassed the 40,000 app mark, while this data indicates it has yes to reach it.
But what is clear, is the iOS and Android are leading the way in getting apps to market.
