Motorola is working on a fantastic modular phone project

Wouldnt it be great if you could upgrade individual parts of your smartphone instead of buying a brand new model? Motorola wants to make that a reality. The company has revealed that it’s working on Project Ara, smartphones comprised of an endoskeleton and modular blocks containing components.

Motorola posted some of its early designs too, which look intriguing:

Here’s the idea: the endoskeleton will hold all the pieces in place, with each individual block containing a distinct component. Want to upgrade the processor? Great, swap that piece out. Ditto for anything else you can think of.

Motorola intends to release an alpha version of a Module Developer’s Kit later this year, but it may be a while before we see any such product make it to the retail market. Still, it’s a nice glimpse at the future of the smartphone.
