Motorola MOTOSMART confirmed: hands-on photos

With the Motorola Atrix HD launching in the US, the company’s UK portfolio has been looking a little tired of late. The Android powered RAZR still occupies the flagship position over here, whilst the most recent addition, the MOTOLUXE touched down in February aiming to provide some affordable quality to the current lineup of devices. Now the MOTOSMART takes its place as the company’s new affordable Android smartphone launching in the coming weeks for just £99.

Motorola smart main features

The makeup of the MOTOSMART certainly resembles the slightly older MOTOLUXE with similar styling, albeit without that attractive notification light, and the metal grill back plate in amidst the soft touch plastic back. We had some hands-on time with the phone today and we were impressed, despite it’s price it feels very solid and well built.

The hardware serving offered up by the MOTOSMART is certainly conservative, but with a low retail price, understandable. The 3.5-inch HVGA display and the four telltale capacitive keys underneath elude to the Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread lurking within, it will be getting an update to Android 4.0 ICS, but there’s no news when this will happen.Motorola Smart main menu

Motorola has included its MotoSwitch overlay which features on their lower end Android devices, it prioritises content based on frequency, including apps and contacts, making them easily accessible from the MOTOSMART’s homescreens.

Performance stacks up with a 800MHz single-core processor paired to 512MB of RAM, there’s also a meagre 165MB of internal storage, meaning that the expandable microSD slot is likely to see immediate use, once the phone is out of the box. The final notable component is the 3-megapixel camera on the back which despite lacking the LED flash of the MOTOLUXE is most likely better for it.

The Motorola Smart is coming to T-Mobile on contracts priced £7 a month or £99.99 on PAYG. There’s no news on when it will be coming to other networks. We’ll bring you a full review as soon as possible.
