Netflix to launch UK streaming service in 2012

Watch out Lovefilm, starting at the beginning of the year you’ll have a rival to compete against – and what a rival it is.

Netflix this morning announced that they’re bringing their service over here to the good old UK. having taken America, Canada, and Latin America by storm, they’re now planning to bring their streaming service across the pond on PCs, Macs, phones, and tablets, as one would expect. Hardware partners will be able to add Netflix to their lineup so you can get your Breaking Bad Boardwalk Empire fix on your TV too.

Interestingly, it sounds like this is going to be a subscription only service, with no mention of DVD rentals, although perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise given the company’s wish to move to a streaming only subscription (and then back again).

There’s also no word on pricing, or more importantly, content partners. A streaming service is no good if you don’t have all the major players on board, especially when Lovefilm have such a strong foothold in the UK already.

Netflix UK will launch in early 2012. Interesting times ahead for streaming fans.
