Finally, a waterproof Kindle! Meet the New Kindle Oasis

Amazon’s all-new Kindle Oasis is the first to boast full water resistance, so you can take it in the bath or rock it by the pool without worry.

As much as we love Amazon’s Kindles, the lack of water resistance has always proved perturbing. After all, where better to chill with a gripping book than in a soapy, hot bath, with some mood music and a crafty cold one?

Thankfully Amazon has heard our pleas and the all-new Kindle Oasis, an updated version of the original Oasis e-reader, is the first waterproof device from the retail giant.

Check out our complete Kindle comparison to see which of the existing lineup is best for you.

How is the new waterproof Kindle Oasis different from the original model?

The biggest difference is of course the updated design, which adds waterproofing. You get a full IPX8 water resistance rating, so the new Oasis can survive up to two metres underwater for a solid hour or so.

While last year’s Kindle Oasis sported a 6-inch screen with a crisp 300 pixels-per-inch resolution, the all-new updated model increases the size to 7-inches. Despite the boost in size, detail levels haven’t taken a hit. And best of all, there’s an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the brightness of your Kindle display – something the original Oasis cruelly lacked.

You now get 8GB of storage space as standard, compared with the original Kindle Oasis which had 4GB. You can also upgrade to a 32GB model, if you plan on carrying audiobooks, graphic novels and magazines around. Good news if you’re an Audible user, or use the handy Amazon Prime Reading service for borrowing reading material.

Yes, that’s right, Kindles will soon support Audible, via an over-the-air update. This includes the generation 8 Kindle and the original Kindle Oasis.
