Sonic fans have been fobbed off with all kinds of half-baked Sonic spinoffs in recent years, but Sonic Runners – our beloved spiky hedgehog’s latest mobile title – does actually look like a Sonic game of yesteryear.
For a start, Sonic Runners enjoys the traditional 2D perspective rather than the 3D efforts much maligned by the majority of Sonic fans, with glorious and colouful 16-bit visuals. However, there is one disappointing caveat: Sonic Runners is an endless runner game, as you might have guessed from the name. That means no control beyond jumping and activating power-ups.
Sonic Runners was put together by the Sonic Team and features the prickly protagonist’s pals, Tails and Knuckles. As usual you’ll be collecting rings and gems, while dodging evil beasties including the nefarious Doctor Robotnik.
The good news is that Sonic Runners has been available in Japan since February and gamers seem to be enjoying it so far. Gaming site BagoGames gave it a 9 out of 10, saying that the game gives more effort than previous Sonic titles.
Sonic Runners will exclusively hit Apple’s App Store and Google Play on June 25th (this Thursday) as a free download,
