The Windows Phone 8 portfolio is still pretty slim, but Nokia and HTC were already leading the way ahead of Samsung with two handsets each, however it now turns out that this wasn’t good enough for Nokia and the Lumia 620 has just been announced in Paris.
At LeWeb 2012, Nokia’s Executive VP for design, Marko Ahtisaari was on stage talking about the state of affairs surrounding some of Nokia’s significant endeavours. Elements such as the Here mapping services which feed into elements of Windows Phone 8 like Nokia City Lens and the design ideals behind their new flagship handset the Nokia Lumia 920, but all of this was merely leading up to the unveiling of a brand new handset to their Windows Phone 8 family in the form of the affordable Nokia Lumia 620.
The Lumia 620 is set to be Nokia’s cheapest Windows Phone 8 handset, but without losing on some of the key features that make the existing lineup so strong. Not only will the 620 be made available in seven colours, two of which are brand new to the Lumia line, but the handset will also tote premium features like NFC despite its entry-level status.
What specifications does the Nokia Lumia 620 have?
Being the new budget Lumia, expect the 620 to offer more conservative hardware than its Lumia brethren, with the key differentiations being software-based rather than hardware based against other Windows Phone handsets.
- Screen: 3.8-inch WVGA (480×800) ClearBlack LCD panel
- Processor: 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip
- RAM: 512MB
- Storage: 8GB onboard expandable via microSD up to 64GB. Addition 7GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage
- Camera: 5-Megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p HD video recording @ 30fps, VGA front-facing camera
- Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, 3G (HSPA+)
- Colour: Lime green, orange, yellow, cyan, magenta, black, white
What operating system does the Nokia Lumia 620 run?
Naturally Nokia’s primary OS is Windows Phone and the Nokia Lumia 620 is the third handset in their lineup to support the latest version of the OS, Windows Phone 8. Nokia’s key selling point beyond the hardware and design of their handsets, including the 620 is the inclusion of Nokia apps and service, unique to their Windows Phone handsets.
Just as with the Lumias 920 and 820, the 620 will be able to offer users access to features like Nokia Music, Nokia City Lens, Smart Shoot and Cinemagraph.
What are the alternatives?
Based on the sub €200 price tag which Marko quoted at the end of the announcement, the Nokia Lumia 620 is set to be one of the most affordable Windows Phone 8 handset by a landslide and even trumps mid and low range Androids in value for money.
When will the Nokia Lumia 620 be available?
The Nokia Lumia 620 is scheduled to hit markets in Asia Pacific and the Middle East in January 2013, with a wider roll out anticipated to arrive in the months following. Having said that, Unlocked-Mobiles have just revealed that the handset will be made available to the UK at the end of January 2013, with SIM-free pricing kicking off at £174.98 and pre orders available now.
What do we think?
If the international pricing remains relatively stable when this handset hits the UK, the specs on offer will trump any comparable device out there. £160 off-contract for a 1GHz S4 dual-core handset with a WVGA display and a 5-Megapixel camera, not to mention the fact that its running one of the latest mobile OSs out there. We’re excited, it’s merely a case of whether it can catch the eye of the average consumer, so used to the myriad of low-cost Android devices that line store shelves, but that shouldn’t be too hard if the lime green finish is on display.
