Nokia Lumia 800 will receive internet tethering in future update

One of the features that we were looking forward to the most on Mango handsets was internet tethering, so it was strange when we received our Nokia Lumia 800 review unit and saw it hadn’t made the grade. Nokia reached out to WinRumors to clarify the situation.

Turns out that tethering will be coming to the Lumia 800, but Microsoft were concerned with stringent FCC regulations, thus holding off on including it until they were sure everything was kosher. Apparently a software update is being worked on that will bring tethering to the handset.

While the Lumia 800 has been receiving favourable reviews, some of the criticisms levelled against it included lack of NFC support and no front facing camera. Nokia’s response? For one, NFC isn’t even supported by the Windows Phone platform right now, but that building a device with “features that users don’t want” will lead to “compromise somewhere else”. Nokia did say that they’ll be working with Microsoft on bringing some of the missing features to future versions of Windows Phone, so it’s not all bad news.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will be available on PAYG and contract starting from November 16th. Check out our review here.
