The Nokia Lumia 920 might be grabbing headlines as the company’s gleaming new lead device, but the Finnish manufacturer wasn’t content with just one handset for their Windows Phone 8 debut. As with last year, it’s launching with two handsets for separate markets, the second of which is the new Nokia Lumia 820.
As with the Lumia 710 to the 800, the 820 offers doesn’t deliver to quite the same standard as its flagship counterpart, with design and hardware creating a different user experience. Intended for the mid-range market.
The main differentiating features between the Lumia 820 and 920 are the smaller, lower resolution display, lesser battery capacity, lack of in-built wireless charging and availability in a wider range of colours at launch.

Despite stepping into frame as the lesser of the two devices, the internals still aim to offer a competitive Windows Phone experience and Nokia has countered its inability to charge wirelessly with a set of changeable shells which conform to the same wireless charging standards as the 920, and as a result working with the same charging accessories.

What do we think?
One of our complaints about previous Lumia phones was the lack of removable memory and it’s great to see Nokia address that here. Despite not having the premium finish of the Lumia 920 or PureView technology (which lets face it won’t appeal to everyone), the Lumia 820 retains the high build quality of the range with fantastic screen and nippy processor – could this be the breakthrough WP8 device? We’ll have to wait and see how much it costs.
