Orange application shop: Everyone’s app it

It’s understandable that some of the phones in the Orange stable might be eyeing the app-happy iPhone with green-eyed envy. Orange isn’t about to neglect its other babies in a hurry though. The Orange application shop has been announced today and is coming soon to an Orange mobile near you. The Orange app shop is due to open its doors in early 2010 and promises access to over 5000 apps, ring tones, games and wallpapers on virtually every make of mobile.

Orange will send out updates to customers next year with instructions on how to download and install the app shop on their phones. The Nokia 6700 and Sony Ericsson W995 (pictured) will be the first handsets in the UK to come with the Orange app shop built in. These will be available in January.

Later in the year we’ll see BlackBerry, HTC, LG, Samsung and Motorola phones coming with Orange app shop pre-installed. Specific versions of app shop will be tailored for phones running on Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.

For added convenience, all purchases for premium apps made in the app shop will be automatically charged to your monthly bill, so there’s no need for you to set up any extra accounts or have your card details to hand. We really like this and think it’d be great if networks could work out similar payment deals.
