Pocket Legends Beta: iPhone and iPad MMO comes to Android in beta form

Pocket Legends is the world’s first mobile MMO and has been out for iPhone and iPad for a while. It’s now arrived in beta form for Android 2.1+ devices and is looking pretty good so far.

In typical RPG fare, there’s a number of character classes to choose from, Warrior, Enchantress and Archer, adept at close-quarter fighting, magic and long-ranged attacks respectively.

The graphics look great and finding your way around the virtual world is no problem at all thanks to a handy map which layers itself on top of the play area. You can also chat to and interact with other players by using an in-game IM system and a series of gestures like jumping and waving hello.

One thing we really like about Pocket Legends is that you can play it virtually anywhere, over Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE.

On our Nexus One we found that controls for things like spells and standard attacks don’t always respond that well (we kept on accidentally casting spells when we meant to attack) and could do with a bit more tweaking. Otherwise everything runs nice and smoothly.

The beta is open and is free to download now. It takes up a fair bit of space on your phone (about 30MB) so bear that in mind before downloading.

Check out the videos below to get an idea of the visuals (admittedly a little cutesy for our liking) and how the game feels. Be warned though, the background music of the second video sounds like a mash-up of ‘Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues’ and ‘The Laughing Gnome’. It’s horrible. It will get stuck in your head and there is nothing you’ll be able to do about it. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

So far we’re enjoying the Pocket Legends beta and are looking forwards to the full version being released.
