Qualcomm’s S4 Snapdragon series: up to 2.5GHz, first device coming end of 2011

More details on Qualcomm’s forthcoming generation of mobile CPUs have been announced at Innovation Qualcomm 2011 in Istanbul. The next-gen S4 range will consist of 28 nanometer single, dual and quad core chips that could run at speeds of up to 2.5GHz.

Excitingly, it looks like we’ll be seeing the first Series 4 device-equipped device arriving in a device that Qualcomm says is coming out this year.

The CPUs that make up the S4 line up are:

APQ8064 (quad core)
MSM8960 (dual core)
MSM8270 (dual-core)
MSM8930 (single core)

Details of these chips were announced by Qualcomm back in February. The chips all include new Adreno GPUs that provide more powerful graphics performance, with the quad-core APQ8064 promising current-gen “console quality gaming,” something we’re itching to see on future mobile devices.

During the keynote speech, Qualcomm also announced that there are 250 smartphone products in design featuring Snapdragon chips along with 40+ tablet devices also in the pipeline.
