R&A releases official 2010 Open Golf Championship iPhone app

Still not sated by the summer of sport? If the football World Cup, Wimbledon tennis and one-day cricket haven’t left you full, you may be looking forward to the Open golf tournament, which tees off next week.

Organisers R&A have released an official iPhone app in advance: a sequel to its well-received app for last year’s tournament. This year, it will serve up live weather conditions, video highlights, a real-time leaderboard, a guide to the course, and profiles and stats for the players.

There’s also a feature called LiveCast, which will be a live video stream from three of the course’s holes (9, 10 and 11 to be specific) during play. There’s also Radio Opengolf, offering live commentary – LiveCast won’t be available to users of the app in all countries, so the radio will at least be a consolation for those who can’t get it.

Live sports apps are increasingly common – witness similar apps for Formula 1 racing and the Tour de France. The Open Golf Championship app might only be useful for a couple of weeks, but iPhone or iPod touch-owning golf fans will love it nonetheless.
