Samsung ChatOn messaging app launches on Android

Samsung has launched ChatOn a new mobile messaging service application.

Available via the Android market and via Samsung Apps, it works across a range of operating systems, including Bada.

As well as exchanging text and multimedia messages, users can share video content and animated messages, with audio and a background picture.

Setting up is easy. Enter your phone number and you’ll get a verification text message. It automatically detects which of your contacts are using Chat On. The interface is very easy to use, and with one tap you can attach multimedia extras.

ChatOn works across a range of platforms, including via a PC. Although the app is free to download and free over WiFi, using 3G will incur costs.

Features include: Group Chat for conversations with more than one person and the ability to send messages to multiple people. Interaction Rank enables users to note how frequently they chat to other users. Trunk lists all messages from specific users in the same window.

Stanford from Samsung UK comments: “Samsung ChatON brings a communication service that encompasses multimedia, social media and instant messaging capabilities that will give our consumers yet another way to communicate and interact with our devices.”

Chat and will be pre-installed on Bada handsets released this October and will be available. It’s going to be available on other operating systems soon.

With so many messaging services around: iChat, What’sApp and Skype amongst them, we’re not sure how successful the take-up will be. But it’s certainly easy to use and has some good features.
