Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 announced

Samsung’s quest for galactic dominance continues with the official reveal of two new Android 2.3 Gingerbread phones, the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 has a nicely sized 3.8-inch screen with a resolution of 800×480 (WVGA) that’s a PLS-type screen. The main camera has a 5-megapixel sensor, autofocus and a single LED flash and there’s a VGA camera on the front.

Internal memory is a sprightly 4GB but as always there’s room for expansion, up to 32GB, through the microSD slot. Along with Wi-Fi, GPS there’s also an NFC chip, marked down as ‘optional’ in the official spec sheets – presumably NFC and non-NFC versions will be marketed a little differently.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 comes with an 800MHz dual-core CPU and 768MB of RAM. This is the first time we’ve seen a dual-core chip in a phone slower than 1GHz. How this will compare against phones with faster single core chips remains to be seen.

One things’s for sure though; dual-core is very much yesterday’s high-end spec in the Android world. The Joneses and their neighbours are all about quad-core these days.

I want my NFC

The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2, which we’ve already seen unofficially, has a smaller 3.72-inch screen and a lower 480×320 (HVGA) resolution. A 3-megapixel camera with no flash and a fixed focus sits on the back; no front-facer on the Galaxy Mini 2.

Internal memory weighs in at 4GB and again you’ve got the option to expand to 32GB via microSD should you wish. The CPU is a single-core 800MHz jobbie and you get 512MB of RAM.

Again, there looks to be two versions of the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 in the pipeline, one with an NFC chip built in and one without.

Follow ups to last year’s Samsung Galaxy Ace and Samsung Galaxy Mini, these phones will be headed to UK shelves in April. Prices aren’t yet available but we’re not expecting these phones to be breaking anyone’s banks. We’ll update you on both of these phones once we hear more.
