Samsung Galaxy Note 3 may ditch plastic build, showcase new design

Samsung has famously opted to keep using plastic and polycarbonate for its wide range of smartphones and tablets, but that might all change with the launch of the Galaxy Note 3. Sources speaking to SamMobile indicate that Samsung is “worried” about the design and build quality of its devices given the recent launch of the HTC One. As a result, the South Korean company is mulling the possibility of using more premium materials for its next flagship device, the Galaxy Note 3.

SamMobile goes on to say that Samsung “isn’t worried” about the software used on its devices, but hardware has become a concern. As a result, Samsung is reportedly looking to switch the materials it uses for the Galaxy Note 3. There’s no word on exactly what Samsung hopes to use, but the company has apparently toyed with the idea of using metal in the past. Specs for the Note 3 are said to include a 6-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 5 octo-core processor, 13-megapixel camera, and the latest version of Android. That could very well be Android 5.0 by the time the Note 3 is announced and shipped.

Prototypes of the Galaxy S4 supposedly employed metal instead of plastic. The company allegedly scrapped the metal design, however, as it couldn’t perfect the build process in time for mass production. That doesn’t sound too far fetched, but there are simpler reasons for why Samsung sticks to plastic: it’s more durable than glass or metal, and certainly cheaper to produce at the sort of scale that the company wants.

Still, Samsung could finally be sitting up and taking notice of the build quality of more recent devices. SamMobile’s source specifically cites the aluminium HTC One, but you need only turn to the Apple iPhone 5, Sony Xperia Z, or LG Nexus 4 to see that manufacturers are backing away from plastic. If Samsung wants people to see the company as a more premium brand, then a change in the design and build of its handsets may just be what’s needed.
