5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ launches, but is bigger also better?

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ is a freshly-launched, 5.7-inch version of its sexy Galaxy S6 Edge handset, with a September 4th UK release date. Could this be the best phone of 2015?

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, known up to now as the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, has been officially revealed in the UK along with the Galaxy Note 5. And as expected, the S6 Edge+ sports a boosted 5.7-inch screen compared with the original S6 Edge’s 5.1-incher, plus an even bigger battery and super-powerful processor.

But does that bigger screen make a difference over the original phone?

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ specs

The S6 Edge+ obviously packs a curved screen like its predecessor, but now it’s a mighty 5.7-inch Super-AMOLED panel, just like the one found on the Galaxy Note 5. That bigger screen is designed for anyone who wants to multi-task or who demands a bigger screen for watching movies on the go, although it does bulk up the handset compared with the original Edge.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ display packs the same 1440×2560 pixel resolution as the old S6 Edge handset. That increased screen size means that images aren’t quite as ridiculously sharp on the Galaxy S6 Edge+, but at 515 pixels-per-inch versus 577 ppi, there’s no obvious reduction in quality. Don’t worry, your HD vids will still look glorious.

That same 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor is packed inside this super-sized version of the S6 Edge, but now you have 4GB of RAM for even more capable multi-tasking. Meanwhile, the bigger 3,000mAh battery supports fast charge and wireless charging, as you’d expect.

There’s no change when it comes to cameras, with a 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front camera in place. And once again Samsung hasn’t included expandable storage, so you’re stuck with the 32 or 64GB of built-in storage.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ features

Samsung has crammed the usual Edge features into the S6 Edge+, which basically means that not enough is made of that curved screen. Still, the S6 Edge+ does pack 4G support and WiFi calling, and that bigger screen is good news for media fans.

You also get a fingerprint scanner for extra security and a rear-mounted heart rate sensor, just like the original S6 Edge.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ UK price and release date

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ will hit the UK on September 4th and can be pre-ordered from EE and other networks from August 18th. EE is offering a free six months Google Play Music subscription to anyone who buys before September 30th.
