Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy Xcover a waterproof and dustproof smartphone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be coming to the UK
We brought you news about the Galaxy Xcover (or GT-S5960) earlier, when it appeared on the Samsung Germany website. It includes a 3.65-inch HVGA touchscreen and includes Samsung Social Hub as part of the TouchWiz UI, which pulls in messages and status updates from a selection of social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
But it’s the handsets tough credentials that are the most interesting.
With an IP67 compliancy rating as well as being waterproof to 1m for up to 30 minutes, the reinforced display includes an anti-scratch screen crafted from tempered glass, which is four to five times stronger than the glass used in regular smartphone screens
Simon Stanford from, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “We’ve designed the Samsung Galaxy Xcover especially for those consumers who need all the functionalities of a smartphone that can stand up to demanding lifestyles. By combining the best of our social features together with a strong, airtight chassis makes this smartphone resistant to dust and water damage without compromising on the design.”
Looking at the specifications, the Galaxy Xcover sits in the middle of Samsung’s range. It is powered by an 800Mhz processor and only has 100Mb internal memory (although a 2GB microSD card is supplied). The camera is a rather lowly 3-megapixels, although the LED flash is also designed to be used as a torch. Connectivity options include support for HSDPA of 7.2Mbps, N WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover is destined to arrive in the UK later this year.
