Samsung’s next Gear 2 smartwatch will pack a SIM card slot, so you can chat and receive alerts even when your Galaxy smartphone’s dead.
Check out our full Samsung Gear smartwatch comparison: Which should you buy?Samsung has gone a little smartwatch happy recently, pumping out three so far in 2014 – the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, and the curvy Gear Fit. Well, the Koreans aren’t done just yet, with the latest Samsung Gear 2 Solo smartwatch spotted touching down in India. And unlike previous Gear watches, the Gear 2 Solo has its very own SIM card slot.
Although Samsung hasn’t launched the Gear 2 Solo smartwatch yet, it was leaked via a shipping manifest as a bundle was sent from South Korea to India for ‘R&D purpose’. There have been rumblings of a SIM version beforehand, and now it’s looking very real indeed.
The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo allow you to take and place calls via your mobile phone, thanks to a built-in speaker and mic – something that works rather well, but with the unintended effect of making you look like a total numpty. The Samsung Gear 2 Solo should have the same abilities, but without the need to hook up to your Galaxy phone – handy if your mobile dies and you need to contact someone urgently.
You should also be able to receive and send text messages and keep up to date with all of your alerts, all without tethering to your smartphone.
We’ll bring you more info on the Samsung Gear 2 Solo’s UK price and release date when we know more, but let us know what you think so far by leaving a comment below.
