Samsung: No Ice Cream Sandwich or value pack for Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab

Those hanging on a prayer for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to grace their Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab are out of luck; not only will there be no full fat Ice Cream Sandwich-action on either device, neither will there be a semi-skimmed ‘value pack’ version of an upgrade either.

The first official statement from Samsung said that “A full update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the GALAXY Tab(7-inch) and GALAXY S is not practicable due to hardware limitations.”

That no-no on the ‘full update’ prompted rumours of a value pack, that would bring select features like Face Unlock and those Holo themes to the Galaxy S, while dropping support for Android Beam, which the non-NFC-equipped Galaxy S would have no use for.

This is not to be however, as Samsung has said that there are “no plans” for this and there “won’t be any form of Ice Cream Sandwich for those devices”.

That said, the Samsung Galaxy S2 which has sold in the millions, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, are both on board for Ice Cream Sandwich. Given the update woes of getting even 2.2 Froyo on the Galaxy S, we weren’t really expecting this to pan out.
