Samsung’s 2GHz dual-core smartphone chip could arrive 2012

What’s faster than a 1GHz dual-core CPU? Why, a 2GHz one of course. Samsung is apparently already working on serving up those in next year’s range of its smartphones.

Samsung Hub quotes a shadowy unnamed source saying that the Korean company aims to “release a 2GHz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year” that “will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC.”

Sounds good to us – bring on faster multitasking, better page load times and all the rest of it. Any phone tricked out with one of those would get pretty darn hot we reckon.

We’ve asked Samsung for some comment on this and are waiting to hear back. Availability of the Galaxy S II, Samsung’s first dual-core phone, was announced just a couple of weeks ago and we’re already hearing rumours of a faster dual-core chip.

If Nvidia sticks to its roadmap, we should be seeing Tegra 3 quad-core chips in devices by December; will Samsung be tricking its phones out with these or will it instead go with this rumoured 2GHz dual core set up?
