Sony’s new six-inch Xperia is an entertainment machine, with an HD screen, 4G connectivity and all-day battery
Sony had a reasonably quiet CES 2014, concentrating on the new Compact version of its glorious Xperia Z1 flagship phone, but a week on it’s announced a new six-inch entertainment device.
The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra packs a six-inch HD Triluminos display, but the splash-proof body is also impressively slim and light, at just 7.6mm and 173g. That’s a tad chunkier than the humongous Xperia Z Ultra (which came in at a svelte 7mm), but a great deal lighter too (212g). More importantly, the Xperia T2 Ultra’s frame isn’t as wide or as long, so it shouldn’t burst out of pockets with the same enthusiasm as the Z Ultra.
Packed away inside is a quad-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon and 1GB of RAM, a step down from the more premium Z Ultra, but it should be enough juice to cope with HD movies and games. A 3000mAh battery more or less matches the Xperia Z Ultra, and Sony’s usual handy Stamina Mode should help you stretch out a full day’s life, by managing your power settings. We managed to stream video for around five hours with the Z Ultra, so expect a similar performance from the T2 Ultra.
A 13-megapixel camera with Exmor RS, plus a 1.1-megapixel front-facing camera, can be used to snap your surroundings and chat online. Sony has opened the camera software to developers, in the hope that budding coders will create new camera apps – a smart idea that could produce some interesting new features. At launch you’ll get a handful of tools such as timeshift burst (takes 31 photos in two seconds), background defocus (blurs the background while keeping the foreground sharp) and collage (does what you’d expect).
The 8GB of onboard storage is a little meagre, but expandable via the microSD slot. NFC support allows you to connect with other Sony gadgetry too, all part of its ‘one-touch- ecosystem.
Although crafted with developing markets in mind, Sony’s PR confirmed that the Xperia T2 Ultra will hit UK shores soon. The Dual-SIM version is likely to remain abroad, however.
