Skype adds multitasking to its iPhone app

When Apple announced that it was launching multitasking on the iPhone we got very excited. One of the main reasons we wanted multitasking was so that we could run instant messaging apps in the background.

Today Skype updated its iOS 4 app to allow multitasking. The new app pops up a call or message notification, even if you’re not using it at the time, and you can take calls outside of the app. It’s better than the old app but it’s still a bit of a clumsy solution.

Imagine you want to discuss a website over IM, for example, while looking at the site in Safari. Yes, you could make a Skype call but we’d like IM too – that’s the sort of multitasking we’d like to see in the future.
