What is the Snapdragon X20 LTE Modem and how does it compare to the X16?

Qualcomm has just launched the powerful new X20 LTE Modem, a very clever chipset that will deliver super-fast browsing and download speeds when they’re packed inside the latest smartphones. Here’s everything you need to know about the Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 LTE Modem and how the X20 compares with the previous X16 Modem.

Ahead of MWC 2017, which kicks off on February 26 2017 in Barcelona, chipset guru Qualcomm has already revealed some of its sexy new mobile developments.

First, we had the first router and mobile chips to support 802.11ax WiFi, which will allow us to hook up dozens of connected devices at home and stream some gorgeous 4K movies with no bottleneck.

And now Qualcomm has peeled back the curtain on its new Snapdragon X20 LTE Modem, which is designed to offer unrivalled mobile download speeds when you’re out and about. That’s great news for anyone who wants to stream high-def video on the go.

Here’s the full specs of the Snapdragon X20 Modem and how it compares with the existing Snapdragon X16 chipset.

What are the Snapdragon X20 Modem benefits compared with the Snapdragon X16 and other mobile modems?

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X20 Modem delivers fiber-like LTE Category 18 download speeds to any mobile devices lucky enough to pack it. That means ridiculously nippy download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, provided you have the infrastructure support of course. That’s in comparison with the cap of 1Gbps in the previous generation chipset.

You’ll also enjoy a peak upload speed of 150Mbps.

Spectrum availability between different countries is seriously diverse at the moment, as anyone who roams abroad often will know. This is where the X20 Modem offers another benefit, with a greater degree of flexibility. Qualcomm says you should get up to 1Gbps speeds from a wider range of spectrums when you roam, meaning you’re less likely to be stuck with painfully slow internet when away from home.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X20 Modem supports 4×4 MIMO on up to three aggregated carriers, compared with two on the last generation.

Dual SIM Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) capability is on offer too, a first for a mobile modem. Current modems only support VoLTE on a maximum of one SIM, even when two SIM cards are supported. But the X20 gives 4G voice support on both SIMs, for greater flexibility.
