Sonos Play:3 affordable music streaming system launches

We’ve long been a fan of Sonos’s wireless streaming systems, but until now they’ve always been rather pricey. Sonos is looking to change that with the Play: 3 a compact music streamer which will retail for £259 – nearly £100 cheaper than the Sonos S5.

Like other Sonos devices it streams music over WiFi from your PC or Mac (including iTunes) or network storage device, as well as letting you access thousands of internet radio stations. It’s also compatible with services like Last FM, Napster and Spotify. All this content is controlled using the Sonos remote control app, which is available for iOS and Android.

For high-quality audio playback the Play: 3 includes three Class-D integrated speakers, one tweeter, two mid-range and one bass drivers. In addition, clever internal sensor detects if it is being used horizontally or vertically, adjusting the output automatically. Pair two Play:3’s together and they work as stereo speakers.

Recombu recently had a demo of the Play:3 and we were really impressed, it sounds amazing and looks great, but what’s really appealing is the price. At £259 it’s very much a mid-range mass market product, at a price point far cheaper than any wireless streaming AirPlay dock, but with the added appeal of Android compatibility.

As part of the Sonos family when used with the Sonos Bridge (which has been reduced to £39), the Play:3 can also provide a multi-room audio solution, connecting to other Sonos devices, as well as Play: 3 units.
