Sony Ericsson Xperia Play coming March 31st

We still can’t quite believe that the PSP Phone – sorry, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play – is finally coming. Looks like we won’t have to wait much longer either; industry website MCV is reporting that the Xperia Play will be hitting UK shelves on Thursday the 31st of March; less than two weeks away.

The word comes from David Hilton, Sony Ericsson marketing director for UK and Ireland, who also says that we may seen the Xperia Play sold in high street games retailers, alongside PSP’s and Nintendo’s forthcoming 3DS’s. Naming no names, (i.e. GAME, Gamestation etc) he says that “We are currently still in commercial conversation, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Xperia Play appear in other channels.”

High street vendors aside, what we do know is that the Xperia Play will be coming to all of the UK networks.

The Xperia Play will be hitting all of the UK networks and will come with six games pre-loaded, including the PlayStation classic Crash Bandicoot, FIFA 10, and the Lylat Wars-esque Star Battalion. The other three games are Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors (a Tekken-style beat ’em up) The Sims 3 and Tetris.

A further 50 games are to be made available through the PlayStation Suite from launch, and will be a mixture of old school PS1 games and current smartphone titles.

The PS1 games will be Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Rally Cross, Cool Boarders 2, WildArms, Destruction Derby and Jumping Flash.

Other non-PS1 titles include Galaxy on Fire 2, Dungeon Defender: Second Wave and Assassin’s Creed.

Still no word on how much this bad boy will cost on contracts or SIM-free – we’re chasing up on that info for you right now.
