Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 2.3 Gingerbread update ETA August 2011: Facebook inside Xperia comes along for the ride

The latest chapter in the Android Update Saga: the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 looks due to get updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread around August this year.

A post over on the Sony Ericsson Product Blog by Rikard Skoberg says that Gingerbread will be landing on Xperia X10’s “in the beginning of August.”

Along with the usual Gingerbread refinements like improved cut and paste, you’ll also be able to do things like installing apps to your SD card and Wi-Fi Tethering – things that you currently can’t do with the current 2.1 Eclair build.

Customs UI refinement seen on phones like the Xperia Play and Arc will (creating folders on the homescreen, improved media widgets) be arriving in the update as well as Sony Ericsson’s Facebook inside Xperia software.

The latter syncs Facebook information like Events to your Xperia phone’s calendar alongside the ususal Android-Facebook integration of grabbing people’s profile pics and assigning them to contacts.

In the post, Skoberg also states that the Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro and X8 won’t be getting any further updates beyond the 2.1 Eclair updates.

Finally, the first people to be getting the updates will be those who’ve bought Xperia X10’s unlocked (or as ‘generic trade kits’ as Sony Ericsson put it) whereas people on contracts will have to wait for their respective networks to test the update before sending them out.

It was back in March when Sony Ericsson first announced that the Xperia X10 would be getting some Gingerbread action, leapfrogging Froyo entirely. Back then, we didn’t have a real idea of when the update would arrive, other than a vague ‘Q2/Q3’ timeframe – now we have a slightly better grasp on things.

Will this breathe a new lease of life into the Xperia X10? Or is it time to trade your X10 in for an Xperia Arc? Let us know in the comments below, or on Facebook and Twitter.
